Security Settings and Editing Collections

Clicking Update/delete existing items from the Collection Administration console enables Collection Administrators to make changes to collections. Collection Administrators have access to one of CONTENTdm's two update/delete interfaces: the Collection Editor (introduced in Version 3.3) or the Simple update/delete interface (prior to Version 3.3). This section will describe the two Update/delete interfaces available based on your operating system.

The collection editing interface is determined by your operating system and security settings. The matrix below shows the operating systems and security settings that provide access to the Collection Editor or the Simple update/delete interface.

UNIX (Apache, Linux, Solaris) Windows IIS (2003, 2000, NT)
CONTENTdm Update/delete interfaces Basic Authentication Basic Authentication NT Challenge/response or Integrated Windows Authentication Combination of Basic & NT Challenge/response (or Integrated Windows Authentication)
Simple update/delete     X Auto default
Collection Editor X X   Manual select

The Collection Editor is available when CONTENTdm is installed on

  • UNIX and Windows IIS machines that utilize Basic Authentication
  • Windows IIS machines that use a combination of both Basic and Challenge/response (or Integrated Windows) Authentication, but the Collection Editor must be enabled manually by a Server Administrator

To manually enable the Collection Editor, the Server Administrator must rename homedesc.exe to home.exe.

The Simple update/delete interface is the only option available when CONTENTdm is installed on

  • Windows IIS machines that utilize Challenge/response (or Integrated Windows) Authentication
