Assigning User Permissions
CONTENTdm has three levels of user permissions. They are listed below in the order of least to greatest access to CONTENTdm functions.
- Standard User - can create Acquisition Station projects and upload items from collections to the pending queue to await approval of the Collection Administrator. Standard User permissions should be assigned to users who are responsible only for metadata entry. This user may also edit items in a collection by searching for them using the Acquisition Station search function and saving the item to their project where they may edit it. Once changes have been made, the Standard User can upload items to the pending queue where they must be approved by the Collection Administrator before being added back into the collection.
- Collection Administrator - inherits the permissions of the Standard User and has complete access to assigned collections; including the ability to approve and edit items in the pending queue; add, delete, or edit collection items; configure metadata fields; and add controlled vocabulary.
- System Administrator - inherits the permissions of the Collection Administrator and has access to all collections; including the ability to create and delete collections; create, update, and delete all user types.
The process for establishing accounts for any one of these user types is explained in the Administration Guide for your operating system (Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, UNIX). Administration Guides are located in the Installation Guide section of the User Support Center. User account creation can be done only by users with permissions to access the CONTENTdm Server.
Standard Users require accounts that have execute permissions on the Server /cgi-bin/admin directory but have not been granted Collection Administrator or System Administrator privileges in System Administration. The Administration Guide covers the setting of /cgi-bin/admin permissions.
For additional information on creating user accounts, refer to the CONTENTdm Administration guide appropriate for your Server configuration.
