Using Domain Accounts to Access Collections

Windows domain accounts may be used to access collections. This allows CONTENTdm to be integrated into your organization's authentication scheme without the overhead required to maintain additional user accounts on the local server.

Two restrictions apply when using domain accounts:

  • The CONTENTdm Manager cannot be used to administer the accounts
  • The CONTENTdm Server must be installed by the local administrator

Domain accounts can be added manually by the Server Administrator to CONTENTdm by following the steps below:

Adding a new collection requires Server Administration access rights. Your operating system will determine how you add a collection.

  1. Connect to the Server Administration page by entering your CONTENTdm Server address followed by /cgi-bin/admin/start.exe.

  2. Click Administer user permissions located at the bottom of the page. The User Permissions page opens.

  3. Click Add new user located at the bottom of the page. The Add User Permissions page opens.

  4. In the User name text box enter the domain\user name. Select the collections the user may administer and click Submit.

    Add User Permissions

  5. The domain user is now added to CONTENTdm. This domain user must also be given execute permission in the /cgi-bin/admin directory.

Tip: This is best done by granting the proper permissions to a group and then adding the new user to the group.

  6. To verify the newly added domain user works correctly, connect to the server page /cgi-bin/admin/start.exe and enter the new domain user name when prompted to log in.

When entering the user name and password in the Acquisition Station, be certain to enter domain\user name as the user name in the Acquisition Station. If the user name is entered without the domain, the operating system will look on the local machine to authenticate and authentication will fail.

To change the user name in the Acquisition Station, click the Edit menu, and selection Options. Click the Upload tab and change the user name.
