Using the Acquisition Station to Create Compound Objects

With CONTENTdm you can add compound objects (items that consist of multiple scans or pages) to your collection. When you create objects consisting of multiple elements such as book pages, text and images, postcards, or multiple views of an object, users' can search for and retrieve the entire entity rather than individual elements.

Version 3.6 users have two options for creating compound objects:

  • Use the Batch Add wizard in the Acquisition Station
  • Use the Compound Object Creator (formerly called the Compound Object Editor) described below.

Users running Version 3.5 or earlier must create compound objects with the Compound Object Creator (formerly called the Compound Object Editor). That process is described briefly below.

To create a compound object, add the individual pages or scans to your project. Add identifying metadata to each of the items that will become part of the compound object. This identifying metadata should be different for each compound object to allow you to work with multiple compound objects at once and easily discern the pages of one document from another. Next, upload the items to the collection. Then using the Compound Object Creator, retrieve all the pages or scans and create your compound object. Finally, upload the compound object to the collection so it will be available to users.
